Juan S. Larrosa-Fuentes, PhD

I am a professor-researcher and director of the Department of Sociocultural Studies at ITESO. I study public and political communication, journalism, and communication systems, with particular interest in the contemporary transformations of media and digital platforms.

In recent years, ethnography has become an important part of my research. I have conducted ethnographic research on electoral campaigns in the United States, public communication during the COVID-19 pandemic, and, most recently, political rallies during Mexico’s 2024 presidential election.

This website brings together my academic publications, research projects, books, teaching materials, and other work developed throughout my academic career.

Research Areas

Political communication, electoral campaigns, public dialogue, digital platforms, and political communication systems.
News production, press structures, the political economy of media, and the public construction of knowledge.

Communication Systems
History, structure, actors, and institutions of communication systems, with particular attention to Guadalajara.
Communication Observatories
Media observation methodologies, communication-system monitoring, and the critical analysis of media institutions.

Ethnography and Fieldwork

A growing part of my research examines political communication through ethnographic observation and fieldwork. I have studied electoral campaigns, government press conferences, and political rallies as material and communicative spaces where actors, discourses, technologies, bodies, and practices converge to produce public and political communication.

Academic Career

I have published research in journals such as International Journal of Communication, Media, War & Conflict, Latin American Research Review, Mobilities, and Virtualis, among others.

I was a Fulbright-García Robles scholar (2013–2016) and a fellow of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) (2024–2025). My work has also received recognition from organizations including Mexico’s Chamber of Deputies, the American Political Science Association, and Temple University’s Klein College of Media and Communication.

Teaching

I teach undergraduate and graduate courses on communication, media, and politics.
