This event will occur in Washington DC on July 2 and 3.

“Political Deliberation and Conversation between Political Elites and Internet Users on Facebook and Twitter during a Local Election: a Political Communication Systems’ Approach,” is the name of the paper that I will be presenting within the workshop. This paper is the outcome of my most recent research on Guadalajara’s political campaigns. The abstract is the following:

Drawing from previous investigations (Duarte & Larrosa-Fuentes, 2013; Larrosa-Fuentes, 2014), this research is concentrated on studying political communication between political elites and Internet users through Facebook and Twitter, in the context of a local electoral campaign. This investigation presents three main contributions. First, it renders information of a political communication process that occurred in an important Mexican city of the Latin American region. Second, the investigation proposes a political communication systems’ model as a frame for studying political communication within social media. This model suggests bounded definitions for the concepts of political conversation and deliberation. Third, online observation and discourse analysis are employed to study political communication between political elites and Internet users in the frame of a local mid-term electoral campaign.

Here is the full program, which can also be found in the workshop’s webpage: https://digitalcampaigning.wordpress.com

Wednesday, July 1

6pm–7.30pm: Welcome reception at Greenberg House, Syracuse University in D.C.

Greenberg House is located at 2301 Calvert St NW, Washington, DC 20008, United States, about five minutes walk from the Omni hotel.

Thursday, July 2

8.45–9.15: Welcome and Introduction

Andrew Chadwick and Jenny Stromer-Galley

9.15–10.30: Interactivity, Engagement, and Mobilization (I)

Social Media and Political Campaigning: Changing Terms of Engagement? —Michael J.
