At least for February, this measure will not take effect while both nations continue negotiating.

In this context, it is crucial to highlight President Claudia Sheinbaum’s credentials. Her stance has been calm and calculated. She has handled the situation with composure, never losing her public demeanor despite the immense pressures she faces. In every public appearance, she has demonstrated patience and, as she herself has stated, has a “cool head.”

Yesterday, the president published a message on social media addressing the people of Mexico. She clearly outlined the issue and detailed the actions that Mexico can take to firmly confront Trump’s tariff imposition without compromising national sovereignty. Her messages have been clear and well-structured, but good political communication is not enough in this case. Politics itself is also crucial. Sheinbaum has carefully chosen the right moments to act, unlike other leaders such as Gustavo Petro in Colombia or Justin Trudeau in Canada, whose reactions have been more impulsive.

The president has opted for prudence and dialogue, maintaining a calm approach and keeping the door open for negotiations until the last moment before considering countermeasures. This approach is crucial because the measures imposed by the United States are aggressive and, in most cases, unjustified. It is important to recognize the essentials, not a negotiation between equals; it is a David versus Goliath scenario.

For this reason, the Mexican government’s strategy must remain cautious, composed, and, above all, strategic. Keeping communication channels open with Washington is essential while also preparing for the inevitable attacks and insults that Trump will continue to offer in the coming months.

By Juan Larrosa, February 3, 2025 Today’s commentary revolves around the issue that has dominated conversations at dinner tables, family gatherings, workplaces, and social media: the tariff measures that President Donald Trump has imposed on various countries, including Mexico.
