Abordajes al estudio de la comunicación

In 2012 I defended my masters dissertation within the University of Guadalajara. This dissertation is devoted to the understanding of a local communication system, such as the newspapers of Guadalajara. This has been a long task and I am still working on this research process.

After presenting my dissertation I have written different texts (peer review articles, book chapters, and journalistic pieces) about Guadalajara’s newspapers. These articles have allowed me to perform a deeper investigation and understanding about my research object.

Today I present a new text that is part of my dissertation. The text is part of the book Emerging Approaches to the Study of Communication (2014) edited by Francisco Aceves and Francisco Hernández—both professors of the Communication Graduate program at the University of Guadalajara. “Structure of Guadalajara’s Newspapers Industry (1990-2010)” is the title of the chapter that I wrote for this book.

The main argument of this chapter is stated in the following abstract: “The newspapers were an important industry for the city of Guadalajara between 1990 and 2010. These media had an important influence in the city’s public life and also became relevant informative machinery for Guadalajara’s inhabitants. Nevertheless, there are few academic investigations about Guadalajara’s local media system. This chapter is a contribution to the task of researching about these local newspapers. Therefore, this research presents the structural and economic characteristics of the newspapers that circulated in Guadalajara from 1990 and 2010. The reader will find information about the structure of ownership and control of the press, and figures about its circulation and readership.”
