Guadalajara’s Media System

As a researcher, I have the interest in the theoretical development of the communication systems concept as an outcome of empirical observations. It is tough—or maybe impossible—to observe all the communication systems of the world. Therefore, I decided to focus on the local communication system of Guadalajara, a Mexican city with almost five million inhabitants and where I have resided most of my life. Through this research, I seek to demonstrate the pertinence of selecting a local object of study that can establish an academic dialogue with other levels, such as national or global communication systems.

The observations on the history, structure, and operation of Guadalajara’s communication system embodies the construction of a map that is always changing and, as the time passes, this chart tends to be more complicated. Although the majority of the articles on this page were written for journalistic publications, I have been working towards academic research that allows me to achieve the theorization state of the media systems concept.
